Mother's Day Ideas

Mother's Day is coming up. Have you started thinking about what to buy dear old mom for her special day? What's that? You're just going to send flowers and a card? Bah. Anna Jarvis would not approve.

Jarvis was a community activist and Appalachian firebrand who successfully lobbied the US to establish a holiday devoted exclusively to honoring the hard working mothers - Mother's Day, as we still know and celebrate it. Though Jarvis was enormously successful, she became disillusioned with the holiday and increasingly disturbed as the celebration turned into an excuse to sell greeting cards, candy, flowers and other items. She was "known for scathing letters in which she would berate people who purchased greeting cards, saying they were too lazy to write personal letters "to the woman who has done more for you than anyone in the world.""

Well, when you put it that way...why not branch out this year and give your mother something a little more fun? Whimsy has an extensive selection of "small stuff" that will definitely add a twist to the usual Mother's Day brunch table. Here are a few things we're thinking about for our moms:

Polka Dot Pill Box - Sweetly retro with demure polka dots and fun round shape. This is not your grandmother's pill box. Buy one for yourself, too! $9.00

Lemonade Jar Soy Candle - Large, clean-burning natural candle with a yummy smell and prettier packaging. Check out all the scents on our website. $26.00

Pale Rose Magnolia Serving Bowl - A unique way to serve homemade goodies, display potpurri, or hold letters. Beautiful and delicate - just like your mother. $41.00

Drink Me Champagne Flutes - Toast your mother with these colorful, hand blown flutes. Sold as a set of 4. $60.00

Our large selection of greeting cards means you won't be caught without something to say. Gift wrapping is available, so leave the details up to us. Your mother would definitely approve.

Artwalk on Thursday

Don't forget to stop by Whimsy between 5 & 8pm on Thursday, April 9th. We'll be hosting an Artwalk reception for Victoria Heuman.

Victoria has created a fresh and innovative form of modern canvas art called Jetscapes. Each Jetscape painting is an original piece composed of multi-level canvases suspended in an array as one complete and stunning work of art. With sleek, minimalistic lines, Jetscapes appear to float off the wall, leaving an awe-inspiring display of shadow, color, form, and architecture.

We have four of these masterpieces hanging up in the store right now, and you need to see them in person to appreciate how truly amazing they are.

Come by on Thursday to meet the artist, enjoy some refreshments, and see some Jetscapes up close and personal.

10% of all sales from Victoria's work while it's in our store will be donated to a local charity, so you can do something nice for yourself while also helping others.

Whimsy gets some good press

If you've checked out this month's issue of Seattle Homes & Lifestyles, you've probably been treated to some Whimsy.

The March '09 issue has an amazing FOUR references to Whimsy, and you can see them online as well.

First, you can see our Carnivale Martini Glasses, Moser Enchanted Bar Bowl, and Facet Martini Picks in the "Bar None" photo spread (see the lovely picture to the left).

Visit the SH&L website to see it all for yourself.

Also, if you scroll down at that same site, you'll see that our Mirage Cabinet was included as an example of classy cabinetry for barware.

Next, the Trend Watch section of the magazine includes an article about the Atlanta International Gift & Home Furnishings Market. In the article, you can hear from Whimsy's owner, Teri Burnett, as she talks about upcoming trends and her special finds at the show.

The article also includes a photo the Soji Solar Lanterns that we now carry (pictured at right).

We're pleased to get such prominent placement in this great magazine.

If you'd like to feature Whimsy or any of our products, just let us know!
